Vegans That Rock!
If you’ve been to Chicago, you’ve probably heard of a power trio that collides punk rock with polka. I’m talking about the one and only Polkaholics. Although polka purists roll their eyes, two of the members actually live a classic polka lifestyle. The other, well…he prefers kale to kiełbasa. I’m talking about bass legend Jumpin George whose energy comes from plants, not pigs.
“Even though we are quite punk, we play a lot of polka events that always include mountains of German and Polish-style meat. Even the veggies are drowned in animal fat. It’s a vegan’s nightmare. I always eat before I arrive.”
Why the switch? “Health mostly but I do love the animals.”
George tries feeding his famous “bananas for kale” salad to his bandmates Dandy Don and Mike Werner, who confess that “It tastes great. What is kale again?”
He tells them, “Go vegan for two weeks. You’ll be amazed at how great you feel. You’ll never go back.”
Nicely put! Jumpin George, you are a Vegan That Rocks!
Jumpin George has retired from the polka and now lives a quiet life in a modest apartment in Brooklyn with his fiance’ Julia.
