Lies about Lies about Mainstream Nutrition


To be perfectly honest, when I first read “Top 11 Biggest Lies of Mainstream Nutrition” I thought it was a joke.  Many of the cited  “lies” were dated and not current.  Like the FDA and Co., we struggle to keep up with current nutrition facts.  We crave one simple and true list.  As we evolve as humans (we are not cavemen) so does our diets.  With all the cancers and heart attacks linked to our growth-hormoned, antibiotic drunken , feces-saturated, GMO-fed dairy and meat supply, organic vegan is the way to go.  Even if you eat grass-fed, antibiotic free, organic meat and dairy you still are exposed to the dangers that come with excessive hormones (cancer) and artery plaque (heart attacks and bypasses) .

Another shelter of truth is big beef, milk and egg lobbies that will do anything to make the public believe that their products are safe and essential for proper health.  These lobbies will fund their own studies and report only the results in their favor.  They will blame high cholesterol, heart disease and cancer on many “other” factors.   When money is made by people bankrolling a study, it’s bogus or suspect at best.  (Putting in Paranoia Here).  It is likely that the author of this article (Kris Gunnars) is being paid by the meat, egg, dairy, Adkins’ diet  and especially the Paleo diet people to write this piece of propaganda.

While I’m not a negative guy but as a vegan and Nutritarian, I feel it is my duty to respond to each item in the article “Top 11 Biggest Lies of Mainstream Nutrition.”  As a facebook response to this post, I responded “This is the exact opposite of what I believe to be true.”  This article makes my head spin because I disagree so much.

The irony to this post is I am being the type of person that I am suggesting you avoid.  Nutrition discoveries are always changing so it is important not to resort to a single source or blog (includes Where do I get the truth?  There are several people I trust but even they do not agree on everything.   Here’s my Nutritional Knowledge Dream Team and yes, they are vegans:

Dean Ornish, M.D.   is the founder and president of the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute  research demonstrating, for the first time, that comprehensive lifestyle changes may begin to reverse even severe coronary heart disease, without drugs or surgery.  Recently, Medicare agreed to provide coverage for this program, the first time that Medicare has covered a program of comprehensive lifestyle changes. 

These professionals are on the cutting edge as they treat patients with nutrition instead of pills.  They are not funded by big business.  Most of them are a part of a group called Physicians Committee For Responsible Medicine(PCRM) and most are vegans .  I have read so many studies on the China Study being flawed but have never understood these critics.  How can you ignore the incredibly case of prostate and breast cancer? How can you be blind to the China Study’s Cancer Maps?

Kris Gunnars is telling the people what they want to hear.  Eat meat, cholesterol is harmless,  fat is good.  While I don’t disagree with everything (Kris still considers sugar bad and am still on the fence about hating gluten), Gunnars’ article upsets me.

Julia will tell you that ever since we’ve been living our own little vegan utopia, I have become an annoying nutrition nerd.  Sometimes nothing sparks animosity like telling someone you are vegan.  In such situations, if you choose to debate, it’s good to do a little homework.  This lecture by Dr. Michael Greger, is great ammunition for such an occasion.  His recent lecture gives the strongest reasons to go vegan, to live.  I urge you to take 55 minutes to watch it.   It may change your life or it will at least make you go hmmm.  It focuses on the 15 leading causes of death.  It turns out a vegan diet can prevent all but one of them (except accidents), treat half of them and actually reverse the top 3.

Juiced Up Thursday

Well we’re back for another juicy Thursday! The Breville is spinning and the fresh veggies and fruits are to be sacrificed. So what was used for the juice this Thursday?

Just for some of you visitors who are new to the Juiced Up Thursday saga, the kale, peppers, and cucumbers are from my personal garden. The rest is store bought. This was a big switch up from the usual boring juices I make: Kale, cucumber, carrots, apple, and lemon. I decided to throw in the berries because well it is berry season after all. And the switch up from lemon to lime was because I thought the strawberries were tart and adding another tart fruit would’ve been quite the lip-pursing experience.

So what do these new additions do for the body?

Strawberries: This sweet, juicy summer fruit is a world class superfood. It boosts your immunity, and is full of anti-oxidants and vitamin C. It also has been linked to wrinkle protection. So put that bottle of olay down and grab a bowl of strawberries. This fruit also helps prevent cataracts, and fights cancer. The Ellagic acid in this petite fruit has played a huge role is suppressing cancer cell growth. And ladies if you’re expecting, strawberries are rich with folate which helps with pre-natal health. Lastly, it regulates blood pressure and lowers cholesterol. This fruit packs a punch!

Blueberries: Everyone wants to find a magic diet pill, but really they should take a look at the little blue fruit in the pint container. Blueberries are known for assisting in weight management. It cuts down on cravings! So stress eaters, think about adding this superfruit to your diet. It also helps with reducing cholesterol, and has strong anti-obesity and anti-diabetic properties. Nature’s only true blue food, the blueberry is chockfull of antioxidants and polyphenols. It assists with prevention against some cancers and the onset of Alzheimer’s

Peppers: Doesn’t matter if it’s sweet or hot, the verdict is in, peppers help with weight-loss efforts. Hot peppers contain capsaicin which gives that burning sensation, but best of all it boosts the metabolism! In sweet peppers there’s a compound (CH-19) which resembles capsaicin which gives it that fat burning effect. Peppers also protects against the build up of cholesterol, and helps with inflammation. Lower cholesterol means lower heart disease rate, and this spicy nugget contains tons of vitamin B which means it helps prevent strokes.

Lime: When you think lemons you think acidic, but when you think limes you need to start thinking alkaline! Limes are full of alkalizing minerals. And apparently pirates fear limes because this little green fruit is famous for curing scurvy. Limes are great for skin care, weight loss, digestion, respiratory disorders, gout, arthritis, diabetes, fatigue and heart disease. Next time your waiter offers lemon in your drink, think about switching it up to lime.

When I made this at the last second I decided to OMIT the apple. Because I thought I was breaking my 1 cardinal rule about juicing: Don’t use more fruits than vegetables. So at the end it was 8 stalks of Kale, 3 Carrots, 1 small Cucumber, 1 small Pepper, Handful of Strawberries, Handful of Blueberries and  1 Lime.The verdict? Delicious. I will make this again soon.

Juiced Up Thursday!

It’s Thursday and filling in for Julia is me (George) for another Juiced Up Thursday!!! So today’s juice is technically a smoothie but keep in mind that the same ingredients could also be used to make a tasty juice with the same nutritional content (sans fiber). In the picture you can see our sad juicer sitting unused in the background. Since Julia bought me a Vitamix for my birthday (which is today), the juicer has been gathering dust.

Here’s the juice, I mean smoothie (give me a break, it’s my birthday). Today’s concoction includes:

Spinach gives you iron, calcium, protein

Celery improves circulation

Kale protects against prostate and colon cancers, effective immune modulator, anti-bacterial and anti-viral agent, anti-oxidant and anti-cancer activities

Carrots help protect from skin, lung and oral cavity cancers, destroying pre-cancerous cells in the tumors, helps controlling heart rate and blood pressure

Strawberries are protective scavengers against oxygen-derived free radicals and reactive oxygen species (ROS) that play a role in aging and various disease process

Bananas replenishes energy and revitalize the body instantly

Flax reduces in total cholesterol, give you omegas

Hemp Seed Powder gives you protein, omega-6 and omega-3 essential fatty acids

Lemon is great for weight loss

The verdict:

Like Beyond Sushi, my smoothie is nutritious and delicious. Even though I intentional kept the sugar content low, you could barely taste the bitterness of the kale. Thank you lemon. I might omit the flax and hemp if you are making it as a juice unless you like the taste of sand.

Julia should be back for next week. She should really bank some. She’s so much better at this.

Benefits of Eating a Plant-Based Diet for Cancer Patients and Survivors

Vegetarian diets offer many benefits for anyone willing to take this major step for improved health. The American Cancer Society acknowledges a correlation between a vegetarian diet and a lower risk of certain diseases, including cancer. Some of the other benefits of becoming a practicing vegetarian include weight loss, lower blood pressure and cholesterol levels, better heart health, improved digestion and elimination of toxins. Patients who are being treated for cancer, or who have finished treatment, can greatly benefit from making this positive dietary change to prevent a future reoccurrence and for recovery purposes.

If the former Surgeon General Koop is to be believed when he claims that 70% of all Americans are dying from diseases caused by poor diets, then a vegetarian diet is definitely the answer to many future health problems. There is data that supports the theory that vegetarians enjoy better overall health with a lower incidence of cancer and heart disease. Cancer patients worried about the possibility of cancer coming back should definitely consider a vegetarian diet to keep cancer at bay. Research findings show that vegetarians live longer than meat eaters, a definite added bonus.

Particularly aggressive cancer treatments like mesothelioma treatments compromise a patient’s immune system, causing fatigue and nausea. For this reason, eating a vegetarian diet that boosts the immune system and increases energy levels aids in recovery and contributes to quality of life during a difficult period. When chemotherapy and radiation are both used for treatment, fatigue becomes an even greater problem.


One of the most talked about bonuses of giving up meat is that it detoxifies your body. Toxins such as pesticides and preservatives are almost eliminated with a plant-based diet. According to the EPA, as much as 95% of pesticide contaminants that people are exposed to come from fish, meat, and dairy products. Based on that estimation, it is easy to understand how a vegetarian diet cleanses the body. The high-fiber content of a vegetarian diet also contributes to the detoxification process of the body by moving food quickly through the body’s digestive system.

Constipation is a major issue for many cancer patients. One cure for this problem is eating more fruits and vegetables for a more high-fiber diet. Vegetarians enjoy the benefits of eating a high-fiber diet and experience few problems with digestion.

One major benefit of eating a plant-based diet is a stronger immune system to protect against infection. Cancer and its treatments compromise a patient’s immune system and eating a vegetarian diet can go a long way to reversing this problem. While many carnivores eat plenty of vegetables, people who are vegetarians typically eat even more vegetables and fruit than meat-eaters.

Anemia and Fatigue

Major problems with fatigue are common side effects of chemotherapy and radiation. Eating as a vegetarian is a great solution. Leafy vegetables like spinach and collard greens provide the iron necessary to eliminate anemia concerns. Fruits and vegetables are carbohydrates that provide extra energy to cancer patients who need the added boost to continue normal activities.

Cancer Prevention

One of the biggest fears that recovering cancer patients face is the possibility that their cancer will come back. Living a healthier lifestyle becomes a goal for many cancer survivors seeking to recover and avoid future problems. Studies indicate that vegetarians have lower rates of cancer. Based on this information, any recovering cancer patient can consider becoming a vegetarian for the added protection.

Weight Management

One of the great benefits of a vegetarian diet is that many people find it is easier to maintain a healthy weight level. Cancer patients seeking to minimize the odds of cancer recurrence must recognize that being overweight puts people at a higher risk for certain cancers. Weight gain is definitely the enemy for health conscious individuals who want to lower their risk of cancer and many other chronic diseases.

There are many reasons for cancer patients and survivors to seriously consider turning to a vegetarian diet. The statistics support the claim that vegetarians live longer and healthier lives with a lower incidence of many diseases. One calming fact that a recovering cancer patient can act on to increase his odds of living cancer-free, is the evidence that eating a vegetarian diet will quickly boost the immune system and provide antioxidants to prevent a reoccurrence of the disease.

More Vegetables, Less Cancer

…or something like that.  This is the kind of bold statement Dr. Joel Fuhrman might make.  I continue my coverage of “The Seed: A Vegan Experience”

Dr.Joel Fuhrman spoke on “Winning the War Against Cancer” in his keynote speech on Saturday, June 16th.  In the spirit of Campbell and Esselstyn (Forks Over Knives), Fuhrman’s doctoring style is nutrition as a cure and drugs as a last resort.  While herbalists, health store owners and eastern medicine lovers have been preaching this for years, the medical community has often been slow in embracing this idea.  Fuhrman brings the science and some very bold statistics that suggest that living a life of what he calls “Super Immunity” will protect you from cancer, cure cancers, prolong life and repair the damage done from eating the Standard American Diet (SAD) for so long. 

As he simply puts it: Health equals Nutrients/Calories or H=N/C for short.  This ideology encourages a higher nutrient to lower calorie ratio, avoiding especially empty calories (containing no nutrients).   I originally saw Dr.Fuhrman in the documentary Vegucated.  I encourage you to read his book Super Immunity.  He’s quite the visionary and quite passionate about his practice.

These are some of Dr. Joel Fuhrman’s beliefs:

•  Too much protein causes cancer
•  Korea has a 90 percent lower breast cancer before introduction of fast food into their diet.
•  White rice is one of the worst things you could eat (zero nutrients)
•  Salt causes stomach cancer
•  It’s a myth that we are living longer these days
•  Living longer numbers are bogus and are actually skewed by less infant mortality rate, due to better childbirth/running water etc.
•  We are suffering longer – we now get sick 10-15 years before we die
                Used to be our quality of life goes down 2-3 months before death
•  Antibiotics cause cancer
•  ITC’s (Isothiocyanates) in cruciferous vegetables repair the dha, neutralize cancer-causing carcinogens
•  All oil is bad – goes directly into the blood stream and instantly turns into fat
•  Grounded up flax seeds not flax-seed oil
•  Flax seeds-prevent breast cancer
•  Best soy products are tempeh and edamame
•  Worse soy products  is tofu dogs and soy protein shake
•  Men who eat beans 3 times a week have 50 percent lower colon cancer
•  Mushrooms make immunity system work better
•  Mushrooms prevent growth of blood vessels – No blood vessels, tumors can’t grow
•  Mushrooms don’t allow you to get fat.
•  You only need a small amount of mushrooms to get these benefits
•  Half cup of onions per day equals 100 percent protection from cancer
•  Half pound of green vegetables per day equals 100 percent protection from cancer
•  Strawberries make you live longer and also prevents colon cancer
•  The best diet is a vegan one that includes nuts and seeds

Sound radical?  You may ask why his findings are not always embraced by the medical community.  It’s been suggested that one possible reason, is that it’s hard for a Doctor to completely abandoned what they were taught and is the current medical thought of the time.  After all, doctors have given this contrary advice for years.

I think we can all agree, GOMBBS makes sense. Dr.Fuhrman’s statistics are hair-raising and certainly brings a new chapter to how we view our health.  Read more and decide for yourself.
